Reginald Koettlitz was born on 23 December 1861. Of German extraction, he trained at Guy's Hospital and went into practice as a physician in Dover. In 1894 he volunteered as surgeon for the Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic Expedition, 1894-1897 (leader Frederick George Jackson) to Franz Josef Land and spent nearly three years in the Arctic Circle. George Robert Milne Murray, FRS, was born in 1858. He was keeper of the botanical department at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington with which he had been connected since 1876. He took part in several scientific voyages for the collection of marine organisms, organizing a cruise in the Atlantic west of Ireland in 1898 that brought back valuable scientific results. Hugh Robert Mill was born at Thurso, Scotland, on 28 May 1861. He read chemistry and physics at Edinburgh University and specialised in marine chemistry, working on the scientific reports of the Challenger expedition under Sir John Murray.
